De Grote Hack App

Challenge

This project was committed by NEN, a Dutch organization which facilitates the standardization process in the Netherlands. We were asked to design an appealing digital service that could teach 8 to 14 years old children how standards work.

Result

A mobile game for kids 8+. We depicted an imaginary apocalyptic world where nobody was following the regulations anymore. So, the player is a hero who has to complete four levels of the game in order to save the world. Inside each level the user must answer a quiz in a playful way. The more right answers she completes, the more points she gets. Finally she’ll be able to share her result with other players. The app was named De Grote Hack (the big hack) and launched in 2016. It was immediately used in Dutch schools for educational purposes. De Grote Hack heroes were sold as 3d printed puppets.

Timeline: 3 weeks

Collaborations: TSL; Blink

Platforms: IONIC framework, Web browsers.

Process

  1. User research, user persona and user journey

Blink was in charge of collecting data through quantitative and quality research (a questionnaire to the target group and an open discussion session) and, based on those data, we depicted a user profile and described different journeys.

  2. Information architecture and wireframes

The final information architecture had to respond to the need to display a specific amount of characters per screen and to deal with the technical limitations given by the framework. Team-work was essential.

  3. Interaction design and prototyping

Children are fast learners. They quickly apprehend different ways to interact with the screen in order to answer questions. By designing a limited number of interactions (ex. move the cards, hold and scroll etc.), we were able to create custom illustrations for each screen.

  4. User interface and mockup

From mood-boards to final detailed illustrations, we designed a style sheet to describe each unit of the game. Actors, fonts, landscapes, icons, sliders etc. Everything was custom made. As the icing on the cake, we made a game trailer as an introduction to the game and hero content of the landing page, where it is possible to download the app on both IOS and Android.
